Cooper River/Delaware River
Urban BoatWorks is an experiential learning program located at the Camden Shipyard and Maritime Museum whose mission is to build character and enhance academic achievement through the craft of wooden boat building. The program serves students in grades 6 through 12 from private and public schools during and after school hours in both extra- and co-curricular programming with boat building and environmental education.
Since the program’s start in 2009, 40 canoes, kayaks, skiffs, and sailing vessels have been handcrafted and launched on local waterways. In 2013, a Stream Stewards program was developed to begin monitoring water quality on the Cooper River and provide broader environmental education about the greater watershed. In 2016, a summer program was created that hires Urban Promise Academy students to work as RiverGuides leading ecology and history tours of the tidal Cooper River.
