Delaware River

The River Ambassadors program provides intensive, hands-on science learning experiences for Philadelphia high school students at Independence Seaport Museum.

The River Ambassadors program began in June 2017 with 12 students who were challenged to learn as much as possible about Philadelphia's surrounding rivers and watersheds, and how to protect them. Ambassadors demonstrate Citizen Science Lab programs for the public that feature hands-on, interactive experiences centered around water, with a focus on the Delaware River's biology, ecology, and chemistry. They participate in on-the-water activities such as rowing and kayaking, conduct daily water testing in the Independence Seaport Museum’s boat basin, and care for its floating wetlands. These platforms are constructed of non-toxic, post-consumer plastics and vegetated with native plants that mimic the ability of natural wetlands to purify water. The Ambassadors also spend time in Spruce Street Harbor Park demonstrating how anyone can take small steps to care for our environment.

Independence Seaport Museum deepens the appreciation, understanding, and experience of the Philadelphia region's waterways.
